An Apologetic Letter: The Sanctity of Marriage

Thesis: Marriage is the symbolic representation of Christ’s love to mankind

The man is to be the protector, provider and priest for his family.: as Christ is to humanity. Jesus describes Himself as a bridegroom to the church-His bride (John 3:28-29, Isaiah 54:5). His marriage vow to His bride is to love her with an everlasting love, to draw her into everlasting kindness, to rejoice over her, to take great delight in her (Jeremiah 31:3, Isaiah 62:3-5, Zephaniah 3:17).

Thus, when a man marries a woman, he is representing Christ uniting Himself with humanity and they reflect His image (Genesis 1:26)-becoming one (Genesis 2:24, Ephesians 5:31-32), just like He and God the Father and Holy Spirit are one (John 10:29-30).

The wife (woman) represents Christ’s true church (Jeremiah 6:2, Isaiah 51:16).

Ok, we need a little background information here. Who is “the Daughter of Zion?” See Zephaniah 3:14-17. Who is Israel? See Genesis 35:10-12. Who is “this nation?” See Exodus 6:6-7. Was the promise fulfill?  See Exodus 19:1-6, Matthew 1:1-17. Yes (!): but wait, what happened to the nation? See Matthew 27:11-60. The chosen nation rejected Christ. Thus, Christ extended His convent to include the Gentiles (non-Jew, ie: me). See John 13:33-35, 1 Peter 2:9-10, Romans 11:22-27. Thus, the Gentiles became spiritual Israel.

Good. Now that we’re up to speed, remember that God made woman from Adams’ rib (Genesis 2:20-23). This is an important fact. The ribs are located to the sides of the human body. Thus, this represent that the man and woman (joined as one in marriage) should work side by side each other just as Christ works side by side along with His church (His bride).  However, the woman does not have authority over the man, just like the church does not have authority over Christ. Christ is the head of the church, thus the husband is the head of the women (1 Corinthians 11:1-3).

I am going to get a lot of heat for saying the S word: Submission.

Yes: submission. The wife is supposed to submit to her husband: just as the church submits to Christ.

If a woman marries a godly man, who fears the Lord and follows His precepts, than submission should not be an issue.

Christ submits to God the Father-even unto death (John 6:38, John 14: 8-14, John 15:10, Matthew 26:39) and the Holy Spirit submits to Christ who submits to the Father (John 14:16-18).

Thus, a husband and wife relationship (without children, we’ll address that later on) reflects the relationship that Jesus has with God the Father and the Holy Spirit with the church.

Now, let us get into the heart of the matter.

The reason that Christians heavily opposes the act of homosexuality is because it mars the symbolization of the work Christ seeks to accomplish with His bride.

The typical biblical explanation that one would receive about the evils of homosexuality is of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19). However, it goes deeper than that.

Homosexuality symbolizes the act of mankind uniting amongst themselves; making themselves their own god and thus rejecting the Creator God. We see this in the story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). The descendants of the antediluvians decided that they were going to unit together and build a tower that reaches to the heavens. That way, should another flood fall upon mankind (they either totally disregarded, or have forgotten the promise that God made to never flood the earth again-Genesis 9:12-17-through the promise of a rainbow) they can hide in that tower and be saved. Thus, they united to essentially “save” themselves: thus becoming their own “god.”  However, Acts 4:10-12 tells us that it is only through the name of Jesus Christ can humanity be saved. To prevent this from happening, God confounded their language and the project was abandon due the language barrier.

Further still, even before Sodom and Gomorrah, the antediluvians rejected God and divulged in all manner of lasciviousness to the point that God’s image in humanity was defaced. To the point that evil reigned continually (Genesis 6)!

The antediluvians were wiped out (except Noah and his family), before God frustrated the work of the Tower of Babel: all which preceded the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Thus, by uniting among themselves and becoming their own “god” they broke the first commandment found in Exodus 20:3, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me;” which is sin-defined as the transgression of God’s law (1 John 3:4)-and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).

So, it is not the homosexuals who are to be hated.

God forbid! Understand this fact clearly:

God loves and suffered the Cross for everyone:  gay, straight, young, old, red, and yellow, black, and white, you name it. Period. In fact, scripture tells us that God does not wish that anyone should perish (2 Peter 3:9, Deuteronomy 30:19-20).

Furthermore, we are admonished to love others because Christ first loved us (1 John 4:7-13.

It is the act of homosexuality that is hated by God. As the saying goes, “God loves the sinners. He hates the sin.”

Homosexual acts:

  1. disrupts His representation of His love for mankind.
  2. are sinful because it transgresses the first commandment (Exodus 20:3). That sin leads to eternal death and He wishes that no man should perish.

Did God not tell Abraham that He was going to go into Sodom and Gomorrah to see first hand the true conditions of their sin prior to destroying the cities (Genesis 18: 20-22)? In fact, He said to Abraham that He will not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah if He found ten righteous individuals? (Genesis: 18:23-33)!!

The fact that these and surrounding cities were destroyed eternally (Genesis 19:24-29) is simply because God did not find the minimum ten righteous individuals! (Genesis 18:16-33; compare with similar story of Nineveh: Joshua 1-4 – paying close attention to Joshua 3:10).

Our God is a saving God!

  1. it leads to eternal death because Nahum 1:9 tells us that sin will NOT arise a second time.

Abortion is heavily frowned upon amongst Christians because it represents the elimination of Christ’s disciples/remnant. Revelation 12 tells us of a story of a woman who gave birth and the Dragon (also known as the Devil, Satan-Revelation 12:9-10) went to wage war with her offspring: who are victorious over Satan only by the blood of the Lamb and the Word of His testimony (Revelation 12:11-12). Thus, in a marriage,

a woman’s (representing the church) responsibility is to care and nurture for her child(ren): provide a safe haven (the home) to which they (the child(ren)) can grow in Christ daily. By doing this, the mother allows her child to be “snatched up to God and to His throne” (Revelation 12:5) and thus protected (Psalms 91).

In abortion, the woman (church) destroys her own offspring (Christs’ disciples) thus fulfilling the character of Satan whom Jesus refers to as a “murder” and the “father of lies” (John 8:44).

God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16, NKJV). He clearly states that divorce was not in His plan at all (Matthew 19:8). Period: with the exception of sexual infidelity (Matthew 19:9; Matthew 5:27-28). Don’t get me wrong. There are (human) exceptions. I say human exception because of sin (Psalm 51:1-5). For example, personally, I would not advocate that a woman not seek separation/divorce if her husband is abusive (physically, mentally, and/or spiritually): for

an abusive husband (or wife) is not exemplifying the character of Christ within a domestic violence relationship (1 John 4:8, 1 Corinthians 13).

So, in a non-abusive, non-sexual infidelity and/or non-extreme situation, why no divorce?

Divorce spiritually symbolizes Christ (the husband) separating Himself from the church (the wife). Or, vice versa, the church (the wife) is separating herself from Christ.

That is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE! In fact, the scripture tells us that NOTHING, absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of Christ (Romans 8:38-39). Nothing. Zip. Zero. Nada. In addition, Ephesians 3:14-20 tell us that the love of Christ “surpasses knowledge” and it is so deep: measured in “breadth, length, height and depth.” Jesus Christ has made a covenant with His bride (Hosea 2:19-20) that He will not forsake her and because He changes not (Malachi 3:6, Matthew 5:18) His word is tried and true.

Therefore, divorce is not acceptable because it again mars the depiction of Christs’ love and says that God is capable of lying and that is blasphemy! See Numbers 23:19.

Polygamy is not accepted in the Christian faith because there is only one God (Deuteronomy 4:35, 39, 1 Timothy 2:5), one truth (John 14:6) and one true church (Revelation 12:17).

There are 2 types of women found in the Bible. One is found in Revelation and is described as a harlot, Babylon, mother of prostitutes and an abomination (Revelation 17:1-6). She is “drunk with the blood of the saints” and thus is a destroyer (a name given to the devil-Revelation 9:11).

The second type is found in Isaiah 4:1: seven women taking hold of one man wanting to be married (“…called by your name…”). These women however want to make their own food, and wear their own clothing-thus not truly being one with the man. Biblically speaking, “food” represents the Word of God, His Law, His Testimony (Matthew 4:4, John 6:35). As well, “clothing” in the Bible represents Christ’s righteousness (Isaiah 59:14-17, Isaiah 61:10, Revelation 19:8). Additionally, we see that before Adam and Eve sinned they were naked but knew it not (Genesis 2:25). However, once they sinned, they hid themselves (or at least tried to) because they realized that they were naked (Genesis 3). Reason? The pure, sinless covering righteousness of God has left them. In Matthew  24, Jesus describes the end times and tells of two women grindindg wheat (main ingredient in bread) and one is taken, the other left behind. This symbolizes how God accepted the doctrine of one church and not the other.

Going back to the two women in Revelation, notice that they are wearing two different colored robes. The robe of the pure church is fine linen (white), bright, and clean (Revelation 19). This is what Christ does to you when you’re joined with Him (Isaiah 1:18). The robe of the other women (the harlot) is purple, scarlet, and she is filthy (Revelations 17). Clearly, these two women are not married to the same man!

Thus, having multiple wives does not make any spiritual sense. Jesus Christ has only one bride. No where in the Bible does Christ say He has “brides.” No. He only has one woman (one church) who Satan is waging war against the remnant of her seed who keeps the testimony of Christ (Revelation 12).

When mankind looks at a marriage (between a man and a woman) here on earth, they are to be continually-time and time again-be reminded of Christ’s love towards them. It’s a circle. The child (disciples of Christ) looks to its mother (the church) for love, protection, safety, knowledge of Christ. The wom then looks up to her husband (Jesus) for guidance, protection, provision and forgiveness (role of Old Testament Levites-priest); who is supposed to be following Christ thus reflecting His glory, His love. The husband then imparts Christ’s love to his wife (the church) who then imparts it to her child(ren) (the disciples) and it repeats (Ephesians 5:21-33). Incredible!

Anything else is not of God. Why is the devil so bent on destroying this cycle? I will leave you with this quote from the movie ‘King’s Faith’ which explains the reason so eloquently:

“You want to make this a fight with flesh and blood: but its not, its spiritual. The power of darkness, the enemy, is afraid of what you can truly become [in Christ]. You need to turn this over to God-right here right now…! Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding, in all your ways submit to Him and He will make your path straight. If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.” The devil wants to confuse humanity so much so that they lose the power (and promise) that they can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens [them] (Philippians 4:13).

Whether you reader are a Christian or not, even if you’re an atheist, one can see the blessings or curse that comes from a marriage. One can see the negative effects a divorce or a dysfunctional family situation brings to children and others around. Statistics shows that Satan is not only working but is seemingly effective in destroying marriages and the family life.

Therefore, better it is to wait and not be married then hurry and enter into a “marriage from hell.”

Friends, marriage “is a life or death question with you.

May the Lord help you to see every snare of Satan and avoid it, and cling to Jesus with heart and soul and mind and strength” (E.G. White, Message to Young Lovers).
